giggle

People just have no idea.

In Texas - a common law state - a couple is married if they cohabitate (a single night can be enough) and hold themselves out as married.  This later part doesn't mean you have to send out announcements.  Insurance, utilities, loans, hotel registers - any single act of Mr. & Mrs. makes a wedding unnecessary.

If you live with a member of the opposite sex and are not completely diligent about telling the world that you are JUST roommates (in Texas), you are married.  It gets really funny when they break up and decide to marry someone else.  There are no common-law divorces.

Not true. They first have to agree to be married, and after the agreement live together as husband and wife and represent to others that they are married.

its a duck thing - looks like a duck, quacks like a duck - marital property, the business side of marriage is designed for fairness - acting married without getting married won't give you the power to fuck someone over

we should recognize that there is a catch-22 mechanism at work here - if you tell the insurance company you're married, then either you are married or you've just committed insurance fraud - some catch, that catch-22
